Situation:
Providence College selected BOND to provide preconstruction and construction management services for the expansion of its Science Complex. The project included a new 37,000-square-foot, four-story addition along with renovations to approximately 80,000 square feet of existing space. The Complex unites three buildings: Albertus Magnus Hall, Hickey Hall and Sowa Hall. Enhancements included: modernized laboratory space, technology-rich classrooms, a roof-top observatory that doubles as an outdoor classroom, a computer modeling and computational lab, microscopy suite, administrative suite, outdoor greenhouse and new student commons.
Challenges:
- Maintained an aggressive schedule to deliver building additions and renovations for completion by July 2018
- Worked with Providence College and planning teams to develop a detailed schedule for preconstruction and construction processes to minimize disruption to an active campus
- Managed logistical challenges of a tight site in a busy area of campus
Solutions:
- Created detail mitigation plans and protocols to ensure safe conditions
- Partnered with the project team, fine-tuning the project’s specifications to best suit the project needs
- Multi-phased approach allowed new addition and expansion to be constructed without disrupting ongoing school activities
Results:
- Delivery of environmentally-responsible project on track, within budget
- New complex greatly enhances the quality of teaching and research for students and faculty in Biology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry, Psychology, and Engineering-Physics-Systems Departments
