Our Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

SITUATION:

BOND was unanimously selected by the Town of Weymouth to provide preconstruction and construction management services for its new innovative learning facility. The 252,170 GSF middle school includes 31,290 GSF of gut renovation. The BOND team demolished the existing middle school, is constructing a two-story building, and renovating the existing gymnasium. The new school will include three distinct academic wings which surround centrally located exploratory labs. These labs spaces will be built around the school’s new Town Square, a central gathering area that functions as the dining facility. Wings to the west and south of the Town Square will house an auditorium, music spaces, a central kitchen, administrative offices, fitness spaces and a fully renovated gymnasium.

CHALLENGES:

  • Close proximity to residential neighbors
  • Maintain an aggressive schedule developed around the school’s academic calendar
  • Demolition and abatement of an existing 250,000 SF building
  • Ensuring subcontractors can deliver the quality and schedule needed for the scale of the project
  • Maintaining the project’s budget

SOLUTIONS:

  • Implement a mitigation plan which includes noise and dust control, a traffic management plan, and community outreach & notification
  • Thoughtfully sequence activities to develop an efficient workflow
  • Select an abatement & demolition subcontractor, Costello Dismantling, that developed a comprehensive plan to safely and efficiently abate, dismantle, and load out the existing structure
  • Conduct a thorough prequalification process
  • Work with the design team and end users during preconstruction to ensure the project vision and program is maintained while ensuring budget certainty

RESULTS:

  • New school will house more than 1,400 students
  • Flexible learning spaces built where students can mature and flourish
  • Creative solution to sandblast hazardous materials under containment allowed concrete to be available for recycling which resulted in cost savings returned to the Town; the innovative approach was recognized as a finalist by the 2020 World Demolition Awards from over 200 world-wide entries
  • Instructional spaces designed for maximum flexibility and student collaboration
  • Meet state and town requirements for building program
