SITUATION:
The Showa Boston Institute for Language and Culture selected BOND to build the new 42,000 SF International British School of Boston, a private school serving Pre-K through high school. The new facility features a library, computer and science labs, a gymnasium, a headmaster suite, and meeting and support spaces for 480 students.
CHALLENGES:
- Sloped site required soil nailing
- Active campus required safety logistics and mitigation
- Neighboring buildings are occupied and functioning throughout construction
SOLUTIONS:
- Additional training and safety measures utilized in construction of the building on a steep incline
- Utilized extensive soil nailing and slope retention systems
- Excavated 11,000 cubic yards of soil to assist in the development of the buildings footprint
- Coordinated construction activities around school operations to minimize disruption
RESULTS:
- Project completed in 13 months
- No disturbance to the active campus during construction
- New building delivers the British national curriculum to over 450 students
